Two Liverpool players have been included in The Athletic’s European Team of the Season.

The 2024/25 season has been a truly remarkable one for Liverpool Football Club, culminating in the club’s second Premier League title and their 20th league crown in history.

Arne Slot’s side also reached the final of the Carabao Cup and narrowly missed out on a place in the later stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool’s story of the season has been one of exceeding expectations?

The Reds entered the season under a cloud of uncertainty, as it was the first time they would be without legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

His replacement, Slot, had enjoyed a good pre-season, but was expected to struggle given his lack of Premier League experience and the fact that Liverpool were not competitive in the summer transfer market.

The Anfield club had brought in only one senior player in the summer, and it was thought that the failure to strengthen the squad would negatively impact Liverpool.

However, the reverse was the case, as Liverpool began the season remarkably, losing just one game in the first half–a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the league.

This run included an impressive showing in the Champions League, where they beat the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and RB Leipzig on their way to finishing top of the Champions League league phase table.

They also went on a 26-game unbeaten run in the Premier League before eventually losing their second league game of the season to Fulham in April.

They also crashed out of the FA Cup, before narrowly losing to PSG and Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup final.

Still, Arne Slot’s men would be crowned Premier League champions with four games to go, helping the club sign off on a high in what has been a strong first season for the Dutchman.

The Athletic has recognised two key members of the current Liverpool squad in their European Men’s Team of the Season.

Mohamed Salah, who is among the front runners for this year’s Ballon d’Or as well as Virgil van Dijk are the two Liverpool players to have been included in the team.

Incidentally, both men recently signed new contract extensions as the club, with their inclusion showing that Liverpool were right in offering them new deals despite their ages.
